Most backcountry emergencies follow the same script: something goes wrong, you stop moving, and then you wait to be found. That third part — being found — is the one you can train for. Sound vs. Light: The Two Channels of Being Found
Sound and light fail in opposite ways, which is exactly why you carry both.
- Sound works when you can't be seen — in forest, fog, darkness, or when you're down in a drainage out of sight. It doesn't need a rescuer to be looking in your direction.
- Light works across distance and darkness — it can pinpoint your position for someone who has already heard you or is scanning the area.
The rule of thumb: whistle first, light to confirm. Sound gets attention; light closes the deal.
The 120 dB Whistle: Why It Beats Your Voice

The universal distress signal is three of anything: three whistle blasts, three shouts, three flashes. Pause, listen, repeat. Rescuers worldwide are trained to recognize groups of three, and almost nothing in nature produces them by accident. One blast means "I'm here, acknowledge me" in many group-travel protocols — but three is the one to commit to memory.
The Micro LED: Light That Survives the Drink
The pendant's micro LED module is a compact beam for both tasks and signaling. One detail trips people up the first time, so here's the activation exactly as designed:
- Remove the end caps from the module.
- Reverse the battery — reinstall it with the pointed end facing the lamp.
- Reassemble and switch on.
The reversed-storage orientation keeps the light from draining in your kit or switching itself on under pressure. When you need it, a ten-second battery flip brings it live.
The module is waterproof by design — in our field footage it runs lit fully submerged. A light that works after a river crossing, a rainstorm, or a capsize is a different class of tool from one you're hoping stays dry. Use it for camp tasks, map checks at night, and — held up and aimed at a searcher's direction — as a position marker after dark.
Glow Sticks: The Battery-Free Third Layer
Chemical glow sticks need no battery, no switch, and no luck. Snap, shake, and they glow for hours. On the FuseRig they serve as the backup underneath the LED:
- Mark your position — hang one at your location so it keeps signaling while you sleep.
- Mark your route — drop or tie one at a trail junction if you've left a note with your plan.
- Mark your people — clipped to each person's cord at night, they keep a group accounted for at a glance.
They won't throw a beam across a valley. Their job is patience: steady, unkillable light that outlasts any battery you own.
Running All Three as a System
A realistic sequence, day and night:
- Stop and assess. If you're staying put, signaling starts now, not at dark.
- Whistle in threes. Three blasts, pause and listen, repeat. Keep it up at intervals — rescuers triangulate on repeated sound.
- Deploy light at dusk. LED for active signaling toward any search direction; glow stick hung at your position as a constant marker.
- Conserve and repeat. The whistle costs you nothing. The LED battery is finite — use it in deliberate flashes (three at a time, naturally) when you believe someone is in range.
The principle underneath all of it: make yourself detectable, then make yourself locatable. Sound is detectable. Light is locatable. Three of either is universal.
Practice Notes
- Flip the LED battery before your first trip so the motion is familiar — then store it reversed again.
- Blow your whistle once at the trailhead of a trip. It sounds dramatic; it takes two seconds; now you know what it does.
- Agree on the group-of-three rule with partners before you need it, so nobody wonders whether your three blasts were a bird.
