Vehicle entrapment is a seconds-and-inches problem. A jammed seat belt, a door pinned against a guardrail, water rising past the sills — the gap between "fine" and "trapped" opens fast, and it closes on the tools you can actually reach.

Why the Escape Tool Has to Be on Your Body

Here's the failure mode most escape tools share: they live in the glovebox, the center console, or a door pocket. Then the crash happens, the car rolls or floods, and the tool is exactly where you left it — three feet away, behind deployed airbags and floating debris.

The physics of entrapment don't negotiate with your storage habits. An escape tool only counts if it's within reach of a belted, possibly inverted, possibly injured person. That's why the FuseRig puts the breaker and cutter on a pendant: the tool rides the same seat you do.

How a Glass Breaker Works

Car windows are not like house windows, and your fist is not the tool for them.

Automotive glass comes in two types. Tempered glass (most side and rear windows) is heat-treated to be four to five times stronger than ordinary glass — but it has a weakness: concentrate enough force on a small enough point, and the entire pane releases at once into small, blunt cubes. Laminated glass (windshields, and the side windows of many newer vehicles) sandwiches a plastic interlayer between two glass sheets; it cracks but holds together, so it must be breached and pushed out rather than shattered away.

The zirconia glass-breaker bead exploits the physics both ways. Zirconia is extremely hard, and the bead concentrates the force of your strike into a point a few millimeters wide — pressure per square millimeter is what defeats the glass, not muscle. We test it on both tempered side windows and laminated glass; you can watch the bead shatter tempered panes and breach laminated ones in our test footage.

Step by Step: Breaking the Window

  • Grip the pendant body firmly, bead forward, thumb braced. Your hand goes behind the strike, never in front of it.
  • Aim at a lower corner of the side window, a few inches from the frame. The center of the pane flexes and absorbs impact; the corners are the rigid, stressed zones where tempered glass lets go.
  • Strike straight in, committed. One decisive, square hit. Half-hearted taps waste the energy that the corner was going to multiply for you.
  • Tempered glass will release the whole pane. Clear remaining fragments from the frame with the tool, not your hands.
  • Laminated glass will crack and hold. Strike the same spot repeatedly until the bead breaches, then push the section out with a protected hand or foot.

Shield your eyes and face as you strike, and mind the glass on your exit path.

Cutting a Jammed Seat Belt

A locked retractor or a deformed buckle can turn the seat belt into the first thing trapping you. The FuseRig's high-hardness zirconia knife serves as the cutter:

  • Open the blade fully to its 60-degree stop — it can't fold mid-cut from there.
  • Pull the belt taut with one hand so it can't slide away from the edge.
  • Cut at a diagonal, drawing the blade across the webbing rather than chopping. Taut webbing parts fast against a sharp edge.
  • Remember the blade's one rule: cut, don't pry — never bend, pry, or twist it.

Cut your own belt first, then others'. You are no use to anyone while you're still pinned.

The Sinking Car Sequence

Water changes the timeline, not the order. The sequence taught by rescue professionals is belt, window, out — and it starts the moment the wheels leave the road, not when water reaches the windows:

  • Belt off. Unbuckle or cut immediately. Don't wait to see how bad it gets.
  • Window down or broken now. Electric windows often work for a short time after submersion — try the switch first, and break the glass the moment it fails. Once water pressure builds against a closed door, the window is your exit.
  • Out through the window, feet or head first, away from the vehicle.

The entire window of opportunity in a sinking car is measured in tens of seconds. A breaker on your neck turns "find the tool" into "use the tool" — which is the whole race.

Practice and Placement

  • Know where it rides. Wear the pendant so the breaker bead sits where your dominant hand expects it. Practice the draw-and-grip motion a few times until it's boring.
  • Brief your family. Regular passengers should know the tool exists and where it is. A ten-second driveway briefing is enough.
  • One per vehicle is a floor, not a ceiling. The pendant covers the driver; think about who else rides with you.
